Girl, 10, wanders away from elementary school in East St. Louis

(KMOV.com) – A 10-year-old girl wandered nearly miles away from an elementary school in East St. Louis Wednesday.

Around 9:15 a.m., police at Southern Illinois University East St. Louis received a call about young girl wandering around campus. Authorities said the girl turned out to be a third grader at Dunbar Elementary who walked to the college campus to search for her uncle.

“She left the school building without an adult recognizing it, but as soon as we found out she was away from the building, we put the measures in place to make sure she was reunited at home,” said Kelli Hawkins with the East St. Louis School District.

The girl reportedly took off when she found out officers were on the way to find her. The school district said a friend of the family recognized the girl and returned her to her grandparents. The girl was not hurt and school officials said they informed her family about what was going on within 30 minutes of her walking away from school.

District officials said they investigating the incident and reviewing their procedures.
