6-inch natural gas line ruptures outside St. Louis IKEA

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Firefighters and Laclede Gas responded after a natural gas line ruptured outside the IKEA store in St. Louis Thursday morning.

Around 10 a.m., the St. Louis Fire Department tweeted the area around the store, located near Forest Park Avenue and Vandeventer, had to be evacuated after a 6-inch high pressure natural gas line ruptured. Later, the fire department said no evacuations were necessary because the westerly wind helped with ventilating the area.

The eastbound lanes of Forest Park Parkway from Sarah to Vandeventer were closed while Laclede Gas responded to the area.

According to the fire department, a person was operating a backhoe that was pushing dirt on the grounds of the IKEA when the gas line ruptured.

There were no injuries.

No other information has been released.
