OVERLAND, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A man died after jumping from a moving police car in Overland, Missouri Friday.

According to the Overland Police Department, 29-year-old Brian Strothkamp Jr. was arrested on a felony domestic abuse charge and was being transported to the St. Louis County Jail when the incident occurred around noon.

Strothkamp was in handcuffs when he managed to get the door open from the back seat of the moving squad car and jump onto Interstate 170 near Olive Street, police said.

Police Chief Michael Laws said the arresting officer saw no signs Strothkamp was trying to hurt himself.

"There is no indication that this was a suicide attempt," said Laws. "My thought is [that] he was just trying not to go to jail, trying to escape."

Law enforcement officials said they could not comment on any of the car's safety features.

Internal affairs from Overland and police in Olivette are investigating the incident.

Authorities are currently awaiting autopsy results.
