FARMINGTON (KMOV.com) -

A 49-year-old man from Ste. Genevieve attempted to escape the vehicle that was en route to jail Wednesday evening. 

James Lake was able to slip his hand out of the handcuffs and grab the bail bondsman Don Operle's handgun, Farmington Police said. 

According to police, Operle jumped out of the truck while leaving Lake still inside. 

The vehicle continued to move west on Doubet Road and eventually went airborne and turned over. 

Lake tried to flee the scene but was unable to due to his injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he was treated before being released into police custody. 

Lake was taken to the St. Francois County Jail and booked on a $605,100 bond.

Multiple felony charges were filed: kidnapping, robbery, armed criminal action, assault, unlawful use of a weapon, escape from custody, two counts of property damage, leaving the scene of an accident, careless driving and operating a vehicle without a valid driver's license.
