Man who tried to stop hit-and-run driver in carriage accident speaks

Posted: Updated:

The man who tried to stop a hit-and-run driver after that driver hit a horse and carriage spoke to News 4 Wednesday.

Michael Fricke was out on a date with his wife downtown when he heard a loud crash.  He said he saw a driver crash into a horse carriage and then run over the coachman. Fricke said the van then left the scene.

"So I ran to the front of the car. Went like this to him and said STOP," said Fricke.

Fricke is in the Air Force and his quick military training kicked into gear.  He pushed his way through the crowd to help while onlookers pulled out their phones and snapped pictures.

"I said ‘hey you just ran over somebody and he was like no, I didn't hit nobody. Didn't hit anybody at all.’ I said ‘turnaround look, you ran over this person.  Nope I didn't hit a single person," said Fricke.

Luckily Fricke slowed the van down just enough for someone to snap a picture of the license plates.  Police were able to stop the van moments after.

Authorities haven't officially charged the suspect, who is said to be a 76-year-old man.  Police said they're waiting on toxicology results.
