Amid unrest in Ferguson, more children seen at demonstrations

Amid unrest in Ferguson, photos have emerged of children attending tense and at times violent demonstrations. The images prompted some to question whether parents should bring their kids to the protests.

Some child trauma experts suggest a young person's lack of life experience may prevent him or her from fully understanding the chaos surrounding certain demonstrations.

Problems may also arise when children witness their parents in dangerous situations, explained Jerry Dunn with Children's Advocacy Center at UMSL.

"If they see their parents in danger, then that means a very different thing for them," said Dunn. "It creates undue anxiety and undue stress."

However, Reverand Starsky Wilson, co-chair of the Ferguson Commission, said he will not criticize parents for bringing their children to protests.

"While this may be visually shocking, the reality is the structures that surround these children disproportionately endanger their lives everyday," said Wilson.
