Police concerned about stolen guns being used in shootings

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) - There is a concern among law enforcement about the number of stolen guns that are used in violent crimes.

Police issued the warning after a man allegedly fired shots at officers Sunday night in Ferguson. Authorities believe the gun allegedly used by Tyrone Harris in the shooting was stolen.

Shortly before the shooting, police said they recovered a stolen gun in Jennings. 19,000 guns were reported stolen in 2014. Some guns are stolen from homes in cars and homes in the St. Louis metropolitan area, but there is a pipeline from rural counties where a higher percentage of residents own guns.

“We believe this is happening. Burglaries are occurring here in Jefferson County and those weapons find their way up to St. Louis,” said Captain Ron Arnhart with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.

Some in law enforcement believe gun owners who leave their guns in places where they can easily be stolen should be held accountable.

“Maybe we need to have those serious discussions about trying to hold our gun owners more accountable on the weapons that they possess now. They need to be held more accountable,” said Captain Jeff Fuesting with St. Louis County Police.
