VILLA RIDGE, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- An armed robbery suspect was wounded in an officer-involved shooting in Villa Ridge Monday afternoon, police said.

Authorities said 57-year-old Franklin Kelley was shot and arrested near the Dollar General Store at Highway AT.

Police said they received a call from a homeowner that someone matching the description of an armed robbery suspect was nearby. When a deputy arrived, he spoke to the suspect, police said.

"The suspect asked what this was about, the deputy said you match the description of an armed robbery suspect from this afternoon, and at that point the suspect pulled a gun from his waist band or somewhere, the deputy didn't see it where it came from, but then the fight was on," said Franklin County Sheriff Gary Toelke.

There was then a struggle over the gun, police said Kelley and the deputy rolled on the ground, with Kelley reaching for the deputy's gun.

"He gained control and shot the suspect in the head," Toelke said.

The suspect was airlifted to a hospital. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave.

Kelley was charged on Tuesday with robbery, armed criminal action and assault on a law enforcement officer. His bond was set at $500,000 cash only.
