ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A van rear-ended a horse-drawn carriage, and then ran over the carriage driver in downtown St. Louis, authorities said.

According to witnesses and police, the incident happened near Locust and Broadway around 5:00 p.m. Friday.

After reportedly driving over the carriage driver, the van fled the crash site.

Sean Walkup is a KMOV employee who witnessed the incident while on his way home.

Walkup photographed the van's license plates to later handover to police, as other bystanders attempted to stop the vehicle altogether.

"A guy jumped on the hood of the car. He couldn't hold on so he started yelling, 'Stop that car, stop that car!' I had enough time to pull out my cell phone take pictures of the front and back license plates," said Walkup.

Police used the pictures and vehicle information to track down the suspect, who was arrested about three miles away from the scene in the Benton Park neighborhood.

The victim sustained broken bones and was treated at a nearby hospital, the manager of the carriage company confirmed. Both carriage driver and horse are expected to be okay.
