Bank robbery, carjacking suspect fatally shoots self during manhunt, police said

A suspect fatally shot himself after he led police on a manhunt following a carjacking bank robbery in the Metro East, police said Friday afternoon.

The suspect carjacked someone in Caseyville, then robbed a UMB Bank in Collinsville before leading officers on a chase into East St. Louis, police said. During the chase, police believe the suspect fired shots in the direction of officer.

According to authorities, the suspect then got out of his car near the intersection of State Street and Pershing and ran, officers then chased him on foot. 

The view from Skyzoom4 showed several officers from the Illinois State Police, East St. Louis Police on the scene.

One person who lives close to where the manhunt ended said police kept her a good distance away.

"The police stopped us and said you can't go back there, it's not safe. My girlfriend said 'that's her house, she lives there," said one resident. "He said she can't go home, it's not safe."
