ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The unexpected shutdown of Missouri Tech in St. Charles surprised both faculty and students who showed up for classes Tuesday night.

Blake Rabon said when he arrived to the college at around 5 p.m., the doors were locked and the lights were turned off.

The abrupt closure reportedly happened in the middle of a term, leaving some without jobs and others without degrees.

Another student, Wil Taylor, said he planned to graduate in October. Now he and fellow peers are concerned about what will happen to the credits they earned and paid for.

"It's very disappointing to be so close to graduating and not be able to see that happen right away," said Taylor.

Despite declining enrollment over the last two years, Taylor and Rabon said Missouri Tech was a good school.

"All the teachers knew what they were doing, what they were talking about, and they taught very well," said Rabon.

"I think the relationships I was able to develop with [the instructors] is probably the one good thing I can take from all of this," said Taylor.

News 4 contacted school officials about the closure, but no one was available for comment.

The Missouri Department of Higher Education retrieved all student files after the closure.

Officials said students should call the department at 1-800-473-6757  for information regarding their credits and loans. Click here for more details.
