WENTZVILLE, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A center turn lane is being added to Wentzville Parkway to make it safer, but police have received complaints about drivers speeding through the work zones. Police said they have written at least 113 speeding tickets  in the section of the road under construction since the project began one month ago.

"There's been so many accidents trying to turn in," said Vicky Eisenbath, whose daughter's salon is located in the construction area.

Eisenbath said she's seen drivers speeding dangerously close to workers in the construction zones.

"I guess people are on missions. They don't pay attention to these guys standing out here... they're close to the roadway and they absolutely don't pay any attention to the signs," Eisenbath said.

MoDOT has seen fluctuation in work zone accident numbers over the past five years. Last year, the number of incidents was half of 2013's 719. In order to reduce the accidents, MoDOT said they're using bigger warning signs, brighter vehicle lights, increasing advanced warnings and increasing attention drawn to the work zones.

"We just need people to put down their phones and pay attention, if there's a reduced speed limit, it's for a reason. It's not to inconvenience you intentionally, it's really about keeping you safer and keeping the people in the work zone safer," said Jeanne Olubogun of MoDOT.

In the end, however, nothing can replace the act of people paying attention, MoDOT said.

The roadwork on Wentzville parkway is expected to be completed in the fall.
