FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Crews are working to clean up and make repairs after a 21-inch sewer main broke and flowed into a creek in Florissant Monday afternoon.

Officials with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) said an exact determination for the break is unknown but heavy rain most likely contributed.

The break caused leaking into a tributary that flows into Coldwater Creek. Roughly 20,000 gallons of sewage entered the tributary before it was blocked off, MSD officials said.

According to MSD, there is no immediate health or safety threat but anyone who comes in contact with the tributary should immediately, and thoroughly, wash with soap and water.

As required by law, the break was reported to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
