FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Area churches have teamed up to help prepare Ferguson area children for the upcoming school year.

The churches have collected 500 backpacks, all filled with school supplies, which will be free for parents to pick up for their children. The bags were stuffed by volunteers, who said they wanted the kids to have as much normalcy this year as possible.

"Last year these students' education was interrupted with the riots that went on and now they have been re-enforced with the bags and supplies and school is open once more and the community is thriving again," said Reverend Sheila Bouie-Sledge of Ladue United Methodist Church.

Volunteers will hand out the backpacks from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday at Florissant's Wellspring Church.
