ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Former KMOV anchor Robin Smith will run for Missouri Secretary of State in 2016, she announced Sunday morning.

"What Missouri needs now, more than ever, is a public servant who checks their politics at the door. That has been my life's work and my training.  I look forward to giving Missourians straightforward, professional service as their Secretary of State,” Smith said in a statement.

Smith plans to file organizational campaign documents this week.

Smith, who is a lifelong Missouri resident, is "looking forward to traveling to every corner of the state to earn the trust of Missouri voters, sometimes assisted in campaigning by her husband," the media release stated.

Smith retired from KMOV on July 31. She has over 40 years’ experience working for television stations in St. Louis.

Smith will be running as a Democrat.
