Marine unit deployed after body found in Mississippi River

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) – The St. Louis Police Department launched its marine unit after a body was found in the Mississippi River Thursday night.

The body was discovered in a log jam by a passing barge just south of downtown St. Louis. The department waited until Friday morning for the recovery because of the darkness and rough waters.

“Because of the size of the log jam and the amount of debris we had to work with, there were a number of hazards we had to death with,” said St. Louis Fire Department Battalion Chief Duane Greer. “Everything slows down. This was not a rescue operation; this was a recovery operation. (We) had to concentrate more on keeping people safe, but still get the job done.

It took two boats two and a half hours to recover the body.

The Illinois Coroner is working to identify the body.
