ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department announced a new Community Engagement Bike Unit on Wednesday.

According to officials, the goal of the unit is to engage with the community, build relationships and promote a positive image of police officers to St. Louis residents.

The two officers representing the Bike Unit will ride throughout all of the city's 79 neighborhoods and attend community events.

"Bike patrols allow visibility and community engagement due to their ease of access, creating more opportunities for officers to facilitate face-to-face conversations with residents," said a statement from the Police Department.

The Bike Unit is part of the department's Community Engagement and Organizational Development Division (CEODD), which was launched in April 2015.
