East St. Louis Meals on Wheels, senior services canceled due to Illinois budget standoff

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

AgeSmart Community Resources announced the Clyde C. Jordon Senior Center closed on Friday due to the lack of an Illinois State budget.  Meals on Wheels, transportation to doctor appointments and all meal services at the center have also ceased.

A press release from the center said the closure is "all because the State of Illinois does not have a budget."

The money which funds the center comes from the Federal Older Americans Act, not the state, said officials, but the state cannot process the federal funds in the meantime.

"How many lives must be impacted or lost for our state to move forward?" asked the press release.

The center serves an average of 50 meals a day at the site and 250 Meals on Wheels a day to "frail" senior citizens.

"That home-delivered meal was probably the one thing that was helping them sustain (themselves) before they would have to go into a nursing home, so it's pretty devastating," said Joy Paeth of Agesmart Community Resources.

The Cahokia Senior Center will also close its doors on Tuesday for the same reason.
