ST. PETERS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Brandon Baker was sentenced to 30 years in prison for a variety of crimes including his attack on a St. Peters police officer.

Police said the officer attempted to give Baker a new mattress for his bed at his cell at St. Peters Police Headquarters, and shortly after. Baker strangled him for approximately 45 seconds.  Baker then removed the officer's radio, dragged him out of the cell, and punched him in the face multiple times.  Following the attack, police said Baker stole items from the officer and attempted to exit the jail.  Another officer caught Baker. who quickly admitted to the assault.  

The officer reportedly sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Police say Baker was originally taken into custody on July 24, 2015 for traffic warrants and for being a suspect in a burglary investigation.  

Baker was originally facing up to 42 years in prison.
