Workers cleaned up and disposed of dead Asian carp at Creve Coeur Lake on Tuesday.

The Missouri Department of Conservation said the dead carp are not unusual for this time of year due to heavy rain and flooding on the Missouri River.

“It’s unsightly and I row a little faster when it gets to the worst spots and then I ask myself why didn’t the park people send somebody out in a motor boat to scoop up the fifty dead fish before the other people get to it,” said Tom Switzer, who goes boating on the lake.

Conservation experts explained that the carp can become trapped in certain areas, where they then starve. The fish can also show sensitivity to water temperature and climate changes.

Officials with the department were not sure of exactly how many fish have died but said they collected more than a thousand dead fish on Monday and Tuesday.
