ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A grandfather could face charges after a one-year-old toddler wandered off overnight.  Police said the child wandered off on Gimblin and was found after 1 a.m.

Residents in the area said the community is not the safest.

"When I first moved here I was scared because the week before someone was shot and killed down there on the porch," said Sylvia Skelton, who has lived in the neighborhood for two years.

Skelton said what happened is unbelievable and inexcusable, a feeling Darlene Walker shares with her.

"I'm thinking, ‘Where is his mother?’ I mean, really," said Walker.

Neighbors wondered how the incident even happened.

St. Louis Police told News 4 the little boy's parents were out of town and his grandfather was supposed to be watching him.

Authorities said the grandfather woke up in the morning and the child was gone.

Skelton said she understands it's not easy taking care of a child, but this should have never happened.

“Supervise your kids, don't let them go out and play by themselves. Keep a constant watch on them, anything can happen," said Skelton.

Police said the child is just fine, but the child will remain in custody of the Department of Family Services until his parents return home.

The child's grandfather said he did not report the child missing sooner because he thought the boy was with one of his other children.
