Mailbox explosion in Ballwin prompts federal investigation

A federal investigation is underway following a mailbox explosion in Ballwin.

Police responded to reports of an explosion in the 700 block of Castle Pines Drive around 11:45 Tuesday night.

Officers discovered a house where someone blew up the mailbox with a possible explosive, said Ballwin Police Sgt. Jim Heldman.

Three neighboring homes were damaged by shrapnel, including the house where the explosion happened. However, police said no one was injured.

The St. Louis County bomb and arson unit initially responded to the scene with Ballwin police, but federal officials are now investigating to determine who and what caused the explosion.   

Further details have not been released at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
