SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

An intense manhunt ensued Tuesday as police attempted to capture the man accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl in Mehlville.

Keith Phillips and Susan Coplin said the alleged molester tried hiding in the backyard of their south St. Louis home, in an effort to escape authorities.

The couple reportedly discovered Larry Alverson, 41, standing at the backdoor after hearing noises outside the home.

Phillips' said he chased the suspect off with a stick, as Coplin contacted authorities.

Before coming face-to-face with the suspect,  the couple said they wanted to help police find him because Phillips' granddaughter lives in the same Mehlville neighborhood where the alleged sexual assault happened.

"You're going to find this really crazy, but as soon as we found out about it, we went driving around, and I told her from that point on I wanted to get this guy," said Phillips.

Police eventually arrested Alverson, after he jumped over a fence and fled the south St. Louis residence.

Alverson is charged with one count of first degree burglary, three counts of statutory sodomy, and three counts of armed criminal action.
