Belleville Chief: I never ordered the American flag off police uniforms

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Belleville Police Chief William Clay said falsehoods are being spread about a plan that many say would take the American flag off the uniforms of his officers.

Clay spoke in front of Belleville city officials and said he never ordered the flag be taken off the uniforms. Clay said he wanted to make the uniform similar to the outfit that other police departments wear in which the city’s logo is on each shoulder. Currently, the logo is on one shoulder and the American flag is on the other.

Clay also said some within the police department chose to intentionally mislead the public about the public. There were several people protesting outside the meeting.

“Unfortunately, some of the employees within the department chose to lie and release misinformation to the public. They chose to tell the public that we ordered the American flag to be removed from our uniforms, that move would be offensive to me,” Clay said.

Clay also said officers can still wear the flag. He said he has a flag patch along with a flag pin and tie clip.
