Memo on American Flag sends community into uproar

BELLEVILLE, Il ( – The Belleville Police Chief is catching heat after a memo he sent out stated a new change in the uniforms of officers.

In the note, the chief says officers would wear the city’s flag on each shoulder instead of the current way which has the American Flag.

“I didn’t think it could be true,” said Belleville City Clerk Dallas Cook. “Who could imagine in today’s day who would think to remove the American Flag? It’s not an option and [no one] should spend time thinking about it.”

The uproar from many community members was heard during a city hall meeting. The cry was so great that the chief issued a new memo saying officers could choose to wear either flag on their shoulders. In the memo, he states employees “released misinformation” about the new policy leading to unnecessary criticism.

“I don’t think our police department did it maliciously or to offend anyone,” Cook said. “We are a community that’s proud to be Americans. We love seeing that on our police uniforms.”

News 4 reached out to the chief for a comment, but was unable to get in touch with him. Residents had a rally planned to protest the decision and say they will still hold the event in honor of the flag
