ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – There is a renewed push for a Veteran’s Treatment Court in St. Louis County.

Supporters of the court say it is just like a rehabilitation program but for veterans.  The court is an alternative to jail time, which is designed to help those in trouble with the law get the help they need.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that under the program veterans facing charges like DUIs or drug abuse will first appear in the veteran’s court, then they will be evaluated for PTSD before entering an 18-month counseling program. The counseling program will be overseen by the court and mental health professionals. After complete ling the program, their charges will be changed or forgiven.

Supporters of the court say it is especially important in St. Louis County because it is home to an estimated 70,000 veterans.

A plan regarding the program is expected to be approved next month.

The program is already in place in the City of St. Louis, St. Charles and Jefferson County.
