DUPO, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A woman said her neighbors’ heroic efforts prevented her from being mauled to death by two dogs outside her home in Dupo.

Brenda Bowder and her small dog were attacked by an Akita and German Shepard that were left unattended behind a four foot fence.

“Then he started biting my arm. Then the brown dog, once he bit my back then started biting my hip and started eating my leg,” Bowder said.

Bowder said every time she tried to get the dogs off her, they bit even hard. Neighbors heard what was going on, one grabbed an aluminum broom stick and ran outside to hit the dogs to get them off her.

“Full baseball swings, because my biggest fear is that she was well on her way to being killed,” said neighbor D.J. Ford.

“If it wasn’t for him, that dog would had my leg for his last meal,” Bowder said.

Bowder was taken to a hospital and is currently trying to fight off an infection that set in.

Bowder said she is glad the dogs did not attack any children. Bowder said she believes the dogs’ owner should be held accountable for leaving vicious dogs unattended.

“I think they need to be held accountable,” Bowder said. “Who has control over dogs that are being unwatched and not cared for.”

The dogs were put in the custody of St. Clair County Animal Services.

News 4 attempted to obtain a comment from the owners, but they were not home.
