BRIDGETON (KMOV.com) – A now former Bridgeton police detective is facing felony assault charges out of Florida.

Detective Christopher Welby, 46, faces felony battery charges on a person over 65 years of age and charges of domestic battery. The victim is his 72-year-old father and it apparently all started over a family argument.

The police report obtained from the Okaloosa Sheriff’s Department which states, “during the argument, Christopher punched the victim in the head and the arm.”

The report also says Welby told the arresting officer that “he was a police officer and he could not get arrested because he was going to loose his job.”

Bridgeton Chief Don Hood said Welby has since retired. The chief would not say when he retired and would not comment any further on any personnel matters. He added that Welby had been with the department for more than 20 years.

News 4 was unable to reach Welby for comment.

According to court records, he is set for trial this August.
