Push for more officers on St. Louis streets halted

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and Police Chief Sam Dotson have backed a plan to add more police officers to the streets but now it will have to wait.

The proposal would have raised some taxes in the City of St. Louis to pay for an additional 160 officers.  The push for more officers comes as the latest crime stats show homicides are up 58.6 percent within the city.

Chief Dotson said one of the best ways to help slow the rise in crime is by getting more officers out on the street.

The plan for more officers is now on hold because the deadline to get it on the November ballot will pass when the Board of Aldermen adjourns Friday.

Chief Dotson said he will continue pushing until he gets the additional officers on the streets.
