ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A Northwoods police officer who was dragged by a vehicle during a routine call will undergo surgery to treat sustained facial injuries.

Police Chief Earl Heitzenroeder said the officer responded to a shoplifting call at a beauty supply store in Northoaks Plaza near Pasadena and Lucas and Hunt on July 3.

When the officer approached the getaway car to make an arrest, the suspect reportedly slid into the vehicle and sped off. The officer hung from the car door and was dragged more than 345 feet, said Chief Heitzenroeder.

The officer reportedly suffered an orbital bone fracture, among other injuries, following the incident.

"To jeopardize a police officer's life over $40 worth of weave, come on, your mindset is somewhere else," said Heitzenroeder.

Police later arrested the suspect in Breckenridge Hills. The suspect was later released pending warrant application.
