COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

The construction project to widen Route 159 in Collinsville is expected to reach completion earlier than scheduled, according to Illinois transportation officials.

IDOT Supervising Field Engineer Barry Gibbs said the project should be finished by November 2015, one year before the 2016 deadline.

Phase one began five years ago south of downtown Collinsville near the Catsup Bottle, and is now completed.

Gibbs said drivers and residents often complain about the lengthy road work process and heavy traffic.

"We'll be glad when it's all done, we all will," said Kay Italiano, a local business owner. "All the businesses on Vandalia Street (Route 159) will be very happy when it's over."

After road crews finish working on curbing, gutters and sidewalks, they will remove the construction barrier.
