Illinois State Police cracking down on drunk, speeding drivers

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV) -- Illinois state troopers will be out in force this weekend to crack down on drunk drivers.

The National Safety Council estimates as many as 400 drivers will be killed on the road this weekend and 50,000 will be injured.

"Our number one challenge for the weekend is impaired drivers," said Calvin Dye, Jr., a trooper with the Illinois State Police. "We view it as if we remove an impaired driver from the roadway, then we're saving someone else's life that was doing everything right behind the wheel until they got struck by a drunk driver."

Dye, Jr. encourages anyone who plans on drinking to find a designated driver.

State troopers also will be utilizing a device called the Lidar speed detector. The detector gives accurate readings and troopers will be using it to stop drivers who are going too fast.

Unlike radar, Lidar can target specific cars. A red laser beam locks on to a car and can detect the speed.
