Police: Bomb found in car during Springfield traffic stop

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Police say a 42-year-old Springfield man has been charged after an improvised explosive device was found in his vehicle during a routine traffic stop in Springfield.

The Springfield News-Leader (http://sgfnow.co/1RT9vJp ) reports that 42-year-old Jason Kumnick of Springfield was charged Tuesday with unlawful possession, transport, manufacture, repair or sale of an illegal weapon. He is being held on $75,000 bond.

Authorities say a Springfield police officer who stopped Kumnick saw a possible explosive device in his car and two certified bomb technicians later confirmed that suspicion.

Court documents indicate the device contained coins that could be shrapnel "capable of causing severe physical injury or death." Assistant Fire Chief Randy Villines said the device has been dismantled and the parts are in storage.
