ST. PETERS, MO (KMOV.com) – A St. Peters man is facing 120 days of shock time in jail after trying to set the home he and his estranged wife shared on fire.

The suspect, 41-year-old Michael Ruffino pleaded guilty Friday to arson and burglary. According to police, Ruffino used a hammer to break through a window and gain entry into the residence. He then took a can of gas from the garage and poured gasoline on the stairs to the basement.

Ruffino tried to light the fire, police said, but the flames extinguished themselves.

Along with the shock time, Ruffino must serve five years of supervised probation with many different conditions, including substance abuse evaluation and treatment, batterer's intervention program, and psychiatric evaluation and treatment.

Ruffino was ordered to stay 1,000 feet away from the victim's home and place of employment. The sentence was given by Circuit Judge Ted House.
