ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A school undergoing renovations in south St. Louis caught fire just before midnight Monday.

The building, located in the 1700 block of Mississippi, was set to become a new campus for the Lafayette Preparatory Academy Charter School, according to the website NextSTL.com. In March, the website stated the charter school would serve around 270 children in grades kindergarten through fifth by early 2016.

The site was formerly the home of the Lafayette Park Baptist Church and School.

Fire officials told News 4 the fire was contained to the first floor but there is smoke damage throughout the building. They said there was no damage to the attached church that was recently rehabbed.

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the blaze.
