MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) - A 42-year-old Winfield, Missouri man is behind bars after allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old girl in Madison County, Illinois.

Officials said the man met the teen on an internet dating site and the Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons said that while this type of incident is not new, it is growing.

"This unfortunately was not an isolated incident," said Gibbons. "Since the advent of the internet, going back to the 90s, we've had cases where adults will attempt to contact, communicate with and meet young people to have sexual relations."

Investigators on the case said Wayne Buckingham, 42, was found in the backseat of a car with the 14-year-old by police.

The victim in the case told authorities she met Buckingham on a dating website called Tag.

Gibbons said the case is a horrible reminder for all parents to get involved in their kids' lives.

"You have total control over their online presence, as a parent, you have a right to control it, you have a right to shut if off completely," said Gibbons. "Whatever you need to do to protect your children, and that's what I strongly recommend."

Madison County mom Yesenia Malagon agrees with Gibbons and said her mother kept close tabs on her phone when she was a teen.

"I didn't get a phone until I was 16 and when I did, we shared (my mom's) phone, so I only had it when I went to sports and when I came back it was hers," said Malagon.

Gibbons said the rule in his house is if he doesn't have the password, the children do not get the phones.

"Taking control of that device can be the best defense against this kind of thing once you have it, once you are able to get in and snoop around, you've got to look around," said Gibbons. "You have a right to go through their room, you have a right to go through their phone."

Buckingham was charged with felony aggravated criminal sexual abuse and could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison if found guilty.
