Wentzville PD gaining first K-9 unit

Posted: Updated:

The Wentzville Police Department will soon have a new tool to tackle the growing heroin epidemic in their area. Donations from the community will now allow them to get their first K-9 unit.

This comes on the tails of a major heroin bust where more than 50 people were arrested across St Charles County. Wentzville police hope the K-9 unit can lead to similar arrests.

“It gives the officers on the street to develop some additional probable cause if they need to search vehicles. It's just a good tool, it's a tool we've needed for a long time and haven't had,” said Maj. Paul West.

The K-9 unit is thanks in large part to the Griffin family. They donated $15,000 on behalf of the Ryan Griffin Memorial Scholarship Foundation. Their son Ryan died from a heroin overdose.

West says K-9 handler Officer Jason Davis will be heading out this weekend to choose the K-9 and will return on August 10th to complete the 6 week Police K-9 handler training program.
