ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The Federal Communications Commission is voting on whether to expand a program that helps low income Americans.

If the program is approved a tax on wireless bills could go up.

The Lifeline program helps millions of people pay their phone bills. The money is generated from a 6 percent tax on wireless bills.

The amount could go up because the FCC wants to give people the option to use the money to pay for their phone or internet service.

The plan is expected to pass.
