A softball coach is facing charges after he allegedly sexually abused two girls who played in the league

Michael Rasmussen, 54, is charged with several counts of sexual abuse of a minor, predatory sexual assault of a minor, and sexual exploitation of a minor.

Rasmussen coached in the Drost Park Khoury Softball League in Maryville, Illinois for three years. Authorities said he started to sexually abuse two girls who played in the league when they were 11-years-old, the girls are currently 13. Authorities said they received a tip about the abuse on Sunday.

“I'm shocked, I'm blown away. This is something that never would have come to my mind with him,” said league trustee Jeff Detton.

Detton said Rasmussen was one of the more well-liked managers in the league and said nobody had reported any issues with Rasmussen.

Detton said the league always takes precautions when hiring coaches and managers.

“We use a website to go out and look and make sure we don't have any history with records regarding sexual predators,” Detton said. “Mike was not on any of those lists when we did our review, so I want parents to know we do check things out.”
