Jennings mayor heads to court over staff's guaranteed term

JENNINGS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - The newly elected mayor of Jennings, who is the city's first African-American female mayor, filed a lawsuit over the city workers' guaranteed terms.

Mayor Yolonda Fountain Henderson showed News 4 a copy of her lawsuit, filed against the Jennings City Council, City Attorney and department heads.

In 2007, the City Council voted to grant guaranteed four year terms for the city's staff.

Mayor Henderson said the motion prevents her from firing workers.

"I should be able to have workers with the best interest," said Mayor Henderson. "Instead, I feel like the ones who are working for me really are still working for the old mayor."

The lawsuit also objects to a City Council vote barring the mayor from going into an executive session with Council members and the City Attorney.

A court date for the lawsuit has not yet been scheduled.
