Allergist: Flooded homes a breeding ground for mold

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – There is a chance that all the rain and flooding in the area could be making you sick.

Home owners that have been impacted by the floodwater should look for black mold spores throughout their homes. A local allergist told News 4 the rainy weather and flooding is a breeding ground for mold.

According to Dr. Rick Barnes, mold is something that half of the people with allergies are allergic too. He said it would not be an issue during a normal rainstorm, “but if you have a leaky basement, a lot of leaves in the gutters, if it stays for more than 48 hours, it's going to cause a problem.”

Dr. Barnes told News 4 if the home is not dry within 48 hours mold will start growing.
