One lane of Highway 79 open through Old Monroe

One lane of Highway 79 through Old Monroe was opened Tuesday morning after flooding forced the roadway to be closed Monday night.

Officials decided to close the road after the Borghman Levee, near Old Monroe along the Mississippi River, broke. Water was mainly over farmland but was also covering parts of Highway 79, which hugs the river.

Officials said four homes, barns, and outbuildings were in the flooded area.

The town of Old Monroe is also concerned about the rising Cuivre River which is putting pressure on the Burlington Northern Bridge. Crews are working to place large bricks to shore up the bridge.

Overnight, crews opened Highway 79 near Interstate 70 but continued to keep the highway closed through Old Monroe. One lane of the highway through Old Monroe was opened around 7:20 a.m. with crews directing traffic over the roadway.

Many businesses in Lincoln County said the closures have negatively affected them. Many residents said traffic is awful. One told News 4 he elected to stay home rather than venture out.
