NORTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) - An alleged gunman is accused of killing a man in north St. Louis and kidnapping the victim's girlfriend.

Police said Tyron Groves, 26, allegedly shot and killed Travis Phillips, 27, inside a vacant home in the 3800 block of Sullivan Avenue on June 6 just after 3 a.m.

Phillips' girlfriend attempted to escape the shooter after witnessing the murder, according to authorities.

While trying to escape from Groves, the woman fell down the stairs and was allegedly grabbed by the suspect. Groves then placed a gun into her back and guided her down the city streets, police said.

The woman reportedly saw officers, who were responding to a nearby car crash, and ran to them for help.

Groves had a semi-automatic pistol with scratch marks over the serial numbers when he was arrested on June 16, police said.

According to the probable cause statement, Groves admitted in an audio statement that he shot Phillips.
