ST. LOUIS, Mo. (BaseballStL) -- Why would the Cardinals risk their reputation and stain their legacy by hacking into the Houston Astros website?

Doesn't make much sense. It seems very unlikely that general manager John Mozeliak would value Jeff Luhnow's opinion so much that the Cardinals front office, in a concerted effort, would be willing to commit a felony to get their hands on the Astros' data. Luhnow has had a nice run of recent success in drafting players, but the Cardinals had a pretty good track record of success before Luhnow started running the draft in St. Louis in 2005. They've been pretty good since he left in 2011.

We won't know for sure until the FBI completes its investigation, but it would seem more likely that the hacking could be the work of a rogue employee or two.

Maybe somebody who didn't like Luhnow personally while he was in St. Louis? Somebody jealous that Luhnow landed a general manager's job in Houston? Somebody simply curious as to whether he could use one of Luhnow's old passwords to gain access to his computers with the Astros. It may be nothing more sinister than that. But the FBI and US Justice Department wouldn't be involved if they didn't think this was an important issue. Looks like the Cardinals may need to “lawyer up”.
