Ohio man plans to enter St. Louis Zoo with gun Saturday

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – An Ohio man is planning to walk into the St. Louis Zoo with a gun Saturday.

Even though there are signs posted around the zoo stating that weapons are not allowed, Jeff Smith is planning to walk into the zoo with a gun visible to others, most likely in a holster or belt on his hip. Smith said he will demand to know what Missouri State Law he has violated if he is stopped from entering.

Since Missouri has open carry laws and the zoo is publicly owned, Smith believes guns should be allowed to be brought inside.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson disagrees and said, “More guns are never the answer. I think we need to have stronger gun laws and make sure that they are used in appropriate ways.”

Chief Dotson is currently working with the city counselor's office to determine what the law allows. He told News 4 police will share that information with Smith when he arrives at the zoo.

Smith made headlines last fall for organizing a protest where people openly carried their weapons through downtown St. Louis.
