BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) - Firefighters responded to a two-alarm house fire in Belleville Tuesday night, which left four residents displaced.

Crews from five different agencies responded to the fire, which broke out before 7 p.m. in the 200 block of North 8th Street.

Thick smoke surrounded the area within 100 feet of the home, making it difficult for firefighters to see with no wind to disperse the smoke.

According to Belleville Fire Chief Pour, firefighters had to evacuate the home at one point for their safety.

Crews were able to re-enter the home and extinguish the fire shortly after 9 p.m.

Officials said the fire was started by an iron that either malfunctioned or was left turned on in the home's second floor.

No firefighters or residents of the home were injured in the fire.

The Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the home's four displaced residents.
