Residents file lawsuit against Swansea over sewage rate hike

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

St. Clair Township residents are filing a class action lawsuit against the Village of Swansea after their sewage rates nearly doubled.

A contract between St. Clair Township and Swansea stated non-Swansea residents whose waste-water is treated by the village's sewage plant will be charged 1.3 percent more Swansea residents.

Under the sewage service contract that went into effect on March 1, St. Clair Township residents will also be charged an additional service fee of $7.34, collected by Swansea and paid to the township.

St. Clair Township residents rely on Swansea's sewage plant for service solely based on where they live.
