Major traffic changes coming to Clayton

Posted: Updated:

CLAYTON, Mo (KMOV) -A major traffic alert for anyone who lives or works around Clayton. A four-month long construction project gets underway Monday morning and it is expected to cause major delays.

The 1.6 mile stretch of Hanley from 64/40 to Pershing will experience varying stages of closures for a long awaited improvement project.

“Worst case scenario is one lane open in each direction, just depends on the nature of the work,” explained David Wrone, the spokesperson for St. Louis County Department of Transportation.

Drivers will encounter regular lane reductions as the county's contractor, Pace Construction, repairs damaged areas of the road's sub-surface concrete base, removes and replaces damaged sidewalks and curbs, builds wheelchair-accessible ramps and performs the actual resurfacing work.

It's set to begin Monday around 7:00 a.m. in the morning near Pershing, but Wrone says rush hour flow of traffic will be taken into consideration each day.

“Whenever possible our contractor is going to make sure that the work is going to be done on the opposite lane,” Wrone said.

The $1.53 million project is expected to be complete sometime in mid-autumn.

Some Clayton business owners told News 4 customers are concerned about trying to get in and out but said local and die hard customers will continue to come in no matter what.
