WELLSTON (KMOV.com) -

Vinita Park officials went door to door in Wellston to explain how the police co-op with the two cities will work.

Monday, the two towns said they are merging their police operations, Wellston chose to disband its police department. Eventually, Vinita Terrace is expected to join the co-op.

“I like what they are doing, I hope it works with the other surrounding communities because I always thought it was a waste and time and money in all these different townships,” said business owner Gary Brockman. Vinita Park's police chief stopped by Brockman's business Wednesday.

Vinita Park Police Chief Tim Swope will be in charge of the police co-op. He said 40 officers will be part of the department. He believes community policing and improving community relationships will be key to fighting crime.

“I tell our guys the police side of this is easy. We know how to go handle calls, the other side is just being human and treating people as you should,” said Swope.

Swope said police co-op vehicles will be out and about soon.
