Animal rescue worker: Dog thefts on the rise in St. Charles County

Posted: Updated:

An animal rescue worker is claiming the number of dog thefts in St. Charles and Jefferson Counties.

The person making claim said dogs are often stolen from backyards. Animal control told News 4 it has not seen a spike in animal thefts, but said owners often don't report their pet missing to authorities. One animal control worker said groups will sometimes come through St. Charles County to steal purebreds before selling them online, or selling mixed breeds to labs.

An animal shelter worker told News 4 even pets that are microchipped sometimes can't be returned to their owners because the corresponding contact information and address are out of date.

“It's one of the most heartbreaking thins when people find a stray animal to see if it can be re-united with its owner,” said Erica Brown with 5 Acres Animal Shelter.
